RESUMO

Introduction: Facial burns constitute a severe medical and psychological challenge, dramatically affecting patients' quality of life. We present an innovative approach involving the use of a monolayer acellular matrix-specifically the INTEGRA® Dermal Regeneration Template Single Layer-to optimize skin grafting outcomes in a facial burn patient. Case report: The case revolves around a 45-year-old woman suffering a facial burn due to a clothes iron accident. Following escharectomy, dermabrasion, and homologous tissue graft placement, a monolayer acellular dermal matrix was strategically applied to the right malar area. Subsequently, we conducted a reconstruction with partial-thickness grafts. The integration of grafts with the acellular dermal matrix was seamless, absent of complications. The patient's healing process was marked by significant improvement, devoid of infections, bleeding, or any need for graft resection. Discussion: This case underscores the profound benefits of using a monolayer dermal matrix in facial burn reconstruction. Despite necessitating surgical expertise and meticulous wound preparation, this approach substantially reduced operating room time and improved clinical outcomes. This study illuminates the potential of acellular dermal matrix application in facial burn reconstruction, paving the way for further research and clinical advancements in this area.

RESUMO

Skin contact with phytotoxic chemicals present in Ruta graveolens L. and UV light exposure might cause a nonallergic contact dermatitis known as phytophotodermatitis. We present a major burns case report associated with the use of rue (an herb used in Colombia for cultural beliefs) before entering a tanning bed. The patient presented superficial wounds that evolved to deeper ones in a phytophotodermatitis reaction that acted as a chemical burn. The patient presented an estimated percentage of total burn surface area of 85% with second-degree burns. It took two and a half months to apply multiple debridements and bandage coverage before discharge. One month later, the patient presented a dark purplish pigmentation mainly in the lower limbs. Since ancient times, rue has been used as part of medical pharmacy, insecticidal activities, and for superstitious purposes. In many countries, rue is used as part of an elixir that helps with bad luck, envy, and anguish, and the risks associated with those uses are unknown. This is a critical and alarming public health problem. Awareness of possible complications that could develop after rue and tanning beds should encourage patients and physicians to prevent and treat this dangerous combination.

To evaluate the effects of different types of verbal con-sequences on trajectory perception, a task of "finding a lost mobile object" was used. In that task, Little Red Riding Hood was presented on a computer screen, walking towards a forest, following different paths (horizontal, vertical, diagonal at 15º, diagonal at 45°, and zigzag). Few seconds after her entry and disap-pearance in the forest (delays of 1, 2, or 4 seconds), participants were asked to place the pointer on the area of the forest where she might be found. Indepen-dent groups of university students received different verbal consequences for their responses: a) correct/incorrect, b) specification of error parameters, and c) self-administered consequences. A control group only received points for their correct responses. The results show higher accuracy in the participants who received consequences that specified the error parameters in the horizontal and vertical trajectories with the shortest de-lays. The dispositional function of verbal consequences as mediators in trajectory perception is discussed

PURPOSE: Despite the high rate of sexual limitation in female patients with hip osteoarthritis, evidence reporting sexual satisfaction after hip arthroplasty in women is limited. This study aimed to assess the impact of surgery on sexual satisfaction in women who undergo elective total hip arthroplasty (THA). As a secondary objective, we measured the effect of THA on different factors that could be related to sexual limitation and satisfaction. METHODS: We designed a prospective before-and-after cohort study in which all consecutive women undergoing THA were screened for inclusion. Patients answered a ten question specifically designed questionnaire before and after surgery. An independent analysis was performed for each question through a McNemar-Bowker test for paired proportions. RESULTS: Fifty-six patients completed the protocol and were available for analysis at the end of the study. Sexual satisfaction increased from 29% before surgery to 93% after the procedure (p < 0.001). All questions related to physical limitations demonstrated significant improvement after surgery. In addition, psychological aspects of limitation including fear of pain and injury, or perception of attractiveness, showed significant recovery as well. CONCLUSION: There is a high rate of patients reporting limitations and disabilities during sexual activities among women with osteoarthritis. THA represents a positive impact on sexual functioning both in its physical and psychological aspects, thus increasing satisfaction rates in female patients. Surgeons should include these elements in the conversation with patients before and after surgery.

RESUMO

After 25 years of genetically modified cotton cultivation in Mexico, gene flow between transgenic individuals and their wild relatives represents an opportunity for analysing the impacts of the presence of novel genes in ecological and evolutionary processes in natural conditions. We show comprehensive empirical evidence on the physiological, metabolic, and ecological effects of transgene introgression in wild cotton, Gossypium hirsutum. We report that the expression of both the cry and cp4-epsps genes in wild cotton under natural conditions altered extrafloral nectar inducibility and thus, its association with different ant species: the dominance of the defensive species Camponotus planatus in Bt plants, the presence of cp4-epsps without defence role of Monomorium ebeninum ants, and of the invasive species Paratrechina longicornis in wild plants without transgenes. Moreover, we found an increase in herbivore damage to cp4-epsps plants. Our results reveal the influence of transgene expression on native ecological interactions. These findings can be useful in the design of risk assessment methodologies for genetically modified organisms and the in situ conservation of G. hirsutum metapopulations.

RESUMO

The domestication syndrome of many plants includes changes in their mating systems. The evolution of the latter is shaped by ecological and genetic factors that are particular to an area. Thus, the reproductive biology of wild relatives must be studied in their natural distribution to understand the mating system of a crop species as a whole. Gossypium hirsutum (upland cotton) includes both domesticated varieties and wild populations of the same species. Most studies on mating systems describe cultivated cotton as self-pollinated, while studies on pollen dispersal report outcrossing; however, the mating system of upland cotton has not been described as mixed and little is known about its wild relatives. In this study we selected two wild metapopulations for comparison with domesticated plants and one metapopulation with evidence of recent gene flow between wild relatives and the crop to evaluate the mating system of cotton's wild-to-domesticated complex. Using classic reproductive biology methods, our data demonstrate that upland cotton presents a mixed mating system throughout the complex. Given cotton's capacity for outcrossing, differences caused by the domestication process in cultivated individuals can have consequences for its wild relatives. This characterization of the diversity of the wild relatives in their natural distribution, as well as their interactions with the crop, will be useful to design and implement adequate strategies for conservation and biosecurity.
